Cowboys Brunch is back! Today we speak about the Cowboys pursuing veteran pass rushers. What did Jason Garrett have to say about Ron Leary missing OTA’s? Who are potential unsung heroes for 2016? Does Jameill Showers have a legitimate shot at making the 53-man roster? When you win the spelling bee, what would be your celebration?

Are The Cowboys Right In Not Pursuing Dwight Freeney, Or Just Being Stubborn About Their “Process”? – Tom Ryle @ Blogging The Boys

A great question is brought by Tom Ryle of Blogging The Boys. He questions whether the Cowboys are being stubborn to their approach to signing a veteran pass rusher. The Cowboys didn’t select a defensive end until the fourth round of the draft. Many believe that the team still needs help at pass rusher, but the team wants to take a look at their young guys first. Ryle wonders if Stephen Jones and Jason Garrett are making the right move by not pursuing a veteran pass rusher.

Stephen Jones says the team has no interest in signing Freeney (or any other veterans) at this time, even though the team also considers talent acquisition a year-round concern.”“All those things are things we keep our eyes on, but I don’t think right now we’re ready to make a move on any type of veteran, at this point, that’s available,” Jones said Thursday at AT&T Stadium.”

“While the talk about Freeney is at least partly a result of the phenomenon of every free agent who is well-known getting linked to Dallas, he is a case of a payer who seems to still have some useful talent and who would likely be a usable resource for the Cowboys. Given his age, he would not be able to expect a big or long-term deal, but should be available on a very reasonable one-year contract. With the obvious need for more pass rush, is Dallas being short-sighted in not looking into him?”

Red Dead Revolver: Cowboys’ Garrett has scathing words for Leary – Patrik Walker @ CowboysWire

Sources in Dallas say that Ronald Leary has asked to be traded. Leary believes that he’s worth more than he’s currently being paid and that he should be starting. Leary is staying away from OTA’s at the moment but Jason Garrett has sent a message that’s loud and clear.

“That’s a contract situation that he and his agent feel it’s best for him to stay away,” Garrett said via SportsDayDFW. “We don’t think it’s good for him, we don’t think it’s good for our team. But that’s how they’re handling the situation right now. It’s best to be here working and just going back to business. Take care of your business as a professional on a daily basis, and usually good things happen for you.”

Five Potential Unsung Heroes Of The Cowboys’ 2016 Roster – Ryan Ratty @ Blogging The Boys

Ryan Ratty looks at five potential unsung heroes that the Cowboys could have in 2016. One name that we keep hearing this offseason, especially from Bryan Broaddus, is Mark Nzeocha. Here’s what Ratty had to say about Nzeocha:

“There are going to be concerns over his weight problems, but Nzeocha has the long-term pedigree to develop into a nice depth piece at the linebacker position. His skillset has the makings of a Sam linebacker and while I believe Hitchens will start and perform in the role, I think that Nzeocha’s impact will be felt more in 2016 on both the defensive side of the ball and in special teams as a gunner.”

The Cowboys coaches will have a close eye on Nzeocha as he looks to have a higher impact in 2016.

Jameill Showers Won’t Go Away Quietly – Kevin Brady @ Inside The Star

Jerry Jones has said that Kellen Moore is the team’s backup quarterback moving forward. That doesn’t mean he won’t face competition. Jameill Showers stood out in the first week of OTA’s and he looks to focus solely on the quarterback position in hopes up making the 53-man roster in 2016.

“The problem for Showers is simply the numbers game of the depth chart.”

Dak Prescott is going to have a spot on the team considering where he was drafted this year, and Kellen Moore has been in the system and has some real game experience. And, of course, Tony Romo is going to be on the roster come September.”

“The odds of the Cowboys carrying four quarterbacks are slim-to-none, which may make Showers the odd man out. But if he can continue to impress the way he has during OTA’s come training camp and preseason games, he will have a real shot at making this roster.”

National Spelling Bee co-champ ‘Throws up the X’ in victory, Texas native gets shoutout from Dez Bryant – SportsDay DFW

I found this story to be very cool. Nihar Janga won the Scripps National Spelling Bee and his celebration was “Dez-like”. Make sure you give this story a read.

“The words were tougher. The final rounds lasted longer. The result was the same.”

“The Scripps National Spelling Bee ended in a tie for the third consecutive year Thursday night, with Jairam Hathwar and fifth-grader from Austin Nihar Janga declared co-champions after a roller-coaster finish that saw the Bee run out of words to give.”

“Nihar’s reaction to getting to the end, however, was awesome.”

“There’s a precedent for it.”   I’m Jarren Glover, tweet me @JarrenGlover & @CowboysTalkLine
